Venue

The city of Exeter is located in the South West of England, about 200 miles South West of London, a stone's throw from the South coast and Dartmoor national park (see map at the bottom of this page). The centre of the town, which numbers a little over 100 000 inhabitants, is clustered around its medieval cathedral and historic quayside, and still retains traces of its roman origins. The meeting will take place on the University's Streatham campus, on a hill overlooking the city and the Exe river estuary, about 15 min walk North of the city centre.

Getting to Exeter

Exeter has an international airport, mainly serviced by the low-cost airline Flybe, which flies to a number of UK and European destinations. Bristol and Heathrow airports, with many more destinations and more frequent services, are about 1h and 2h30 away respectively by train or car. Exeter St Davids train station has regular services to many UK destinations (note that, confusingly, Exeter Central station serves only local routes). For more details including road and train directions, and directions from the airport and train station to the campus, follow this link. To book coach or train tickets online, or check timetables, follow this link.

Getting to the conference venue

The meeting will take place in the Peter Chalk and Newman buildings, which are located near the top of the Streatham campus. The buildings are labelled 17 and 18 respectively on the campus map. The Streatham campus is approx. 15 min walk from the city centre and from the main train station of Exeter St Davids. A map of the city can be found here. A regular bus service (bus D) runs to and from the city centre from the Peter Chalk building. For more information on local (and national) travel, follow this link.

Accommodation

A block of en-suite double rooms has been pre-booked for the meeting participants in Holland Hall, a modern and comfortable hall of residence on campus with en-suite bathrooms, internet access and breakfast facilities. This accommodation will cost £60/night (incl. breakfast, and includes Tues & Wed dinners if required). Participants will be given the option to book on-campus accommodation when registering for the conference.

There are many convenient and reasonably priced B&Bs located between the University's Streatham campus and the city centre. This link contains a fairly extensive list of B&Bs and hotels both in and around Exeter, with indicative prices (as of 2009).

Catering

Tea and coffee will be provided during the conference breaks in Peter Chalk. Lunches (two-course meals) will be provided in Reed Hall. There are other options for lunch on campus (not included in conference fee), from snacks to restaurant-type meals; see this link for a list with a map, or just follow one of the locals.

Dinner will be provided for participants staying at Holland Hall. This is included in the bed and breakfast fee on Tuesday and Wednesday, and at a cost of £15/night on Monday and Friday (book when registering). The conference dinner will take place on Thursday at the Abode Restaurant on the Cathedral Square (see "Social" page). The cost of the conference dinner is included in the conference fee. Please indicate on the registration page if you wish to attend the conference dinner and if you will require evening meals. Please note that we regret to announce that the guest list for the conference dinner is now full, and any new registrants will be placed on a waiting list.
