Synthetic HI Galactic plane survey and galaxy observations

Using Torus we can generate synthetic Galactic plane surveys from simulations of spiral galaxies. The latest paper presents results using a galaxy simulation with feedback processes included. This method has also been used to make synthetic observations of external galaxies (see Acreman, Douglas, Dobbs and Brunt (2010))

Exoplanets

We have a project to use the Met Office weather and climate model (the Unified Model) for modelling extra-solar planets (exoplanets). The first results can be found in Mayne et al 2013. Preliminary results were presented as a poster at the 2012 National Astronomy Meeting.

Circumstellar discs

I've developed a 3D radiation hydrodynamics code and applied it to modelling a circumstellar disc. The first results are published in Acreman, Harries and Rundle (2010). The model combines Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) and the Torus Monte-Carlo radiative transfer code.

Previous research

My PhD was on simulations and observations of ram pressure stripping from elliptical galaxies in clusters in the Astrophysics group at the University of Birmingham.

Prior to joining the Astrophysics group at the University of Exeter I worked at the Met Office where I was involved with short range ocean forecasting, working mainly on mixing processes in the surface boundary layer. I also worked the NEMO ocean model and contributed to the Mersea project.
